Relief Wave™ Acoustic Wave Pain Therapy

Acute and Chronic Pain Treatment

The Taylor Medical Group offers a  non-invasive cutting edge treatment called  Relief Wave™  for  pain and injuries.  This FDA approved technology uses sound waves  to penetrate deep into injured tissues.   It can treat and improve  chronic pain, inflammation and acute and chronic injuries. This breakthrough treatment is revolutionary. This fills the gaps for those that have not responded to standard pain relief therapies. It is helpful for old and new injuries. Acoustic wave therapy can prevent injuries for athletes and active individuals.

Acoustic wave therapy  is a non-surgical therapy that uses a stream of pulsed sound waves. It breaks up old scar tissue and promotes blood flow back to the effected area. Patients may experience immediate pain relief but the healing response usually requires 6-8 weeks. For more information take a look at the video above.

    New Blood Vessel Formation

Adequate blood flow is necessary to repair damaged tissue. Acoustic waves, creates small injuries in tendon and bone. This leads to the release of growth factors. This also stimulates the production of blood vessels.   The new blood vessels improve the blood supply of the treated area. This supports faster healing of both the tendon and the bone.

    Reversal of Chronic Inflammation

Chronic inflammation occurs when the inflammatory response is not completely halted. It can damage healthy tissue and results in chronic pain. Mast cells are one of the key components of the inflammatory process. Their activity is increased by using  acoustic waves. Mast cell activation initially promotes  the inflammatory process. Eventually this process restores the normal healing and regenerative processes. This leads to a complete halt in the inflammatory process.

    Stimulation of Collagen Production

The production of collagen is necessary to repair damaged muscles and ligaments. Acoustic wave therapy increases collagen synthesis. The newly created collagen fibers makes the newly formed tendon fibers more dense. This creates a firmer tendon.

    Dissolution of Calcified Fibroblasts

Calcium build-up is most often a result of micro-tears or other trauma to a tendon. Acoustic waves break up the existing calcifications. Shockwave therapy starts the biochemical decalcification of the calcium build-up. The  the broken up granular particles of calcium are then removed by the lymphatic system.

    Decreases Pain Mediator “Substance P”

Substance P,  is  associated with intense, persistent and chronic pain. It carries pain messages to the brain. Lowering the concentration of Substance P reduces the pain. Decreasing Substance P, with acoustic wave therapy  triggers pain relief and decreases edema.

    Release of Trigger Points

Trigger points are the major  cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulder and limbs. They are associated with palpable nodules in tight bands of muscle fibers. The nodules contract so tightly that they begin to cut off their own blood supply. This causes the waste products to build up in muscles. Waste products like lactic acid  build-up and  irritate  the sensory nerve endings. This causes even more contraction. This vicious cycle is referred to as “metabolic crisis”.  Acoustic wave therapy help release the trigger points.

• A typical treatment takes between 10 and 30 minutes
• Normally, 1-2 treatments per week are performed
• A total of 3-6 treatments may be necessary followed by maintenance treatments are recommended for  lasting improvements

Are there known side-effects of shockwave therapy?

Treatment side-effects are limited to reddened skin and/or minor soreness at the treatment site. However some patients may experience pain or discomfort that a fews days after the treatment that usually resolves with ices packs. In some cases a medrol pack may be prescribed to help with inflammation and pain.
