How does Radiofrequency Microneedling work?

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling  is an FDA approved non-invasive treatment that uses radiofrequency or microwaves to tighten loose skin. The radiofrequency (RF) energy uniformly heats the dermis while cooling and protecting the epidermis.  It is designed to cause immediate collagen contraction followed by new collagen and elastin production which occurs over a period of time.

The RF energy causes immediate collagen contraction followed by new collagen production which occurs over a period of time. In the same way that a microwave cooks food, RF energy heats the dermis. This process is called “controlled destruction of collagen” and it is only possible with RF because of its high frequency (RF) energy. RF energy is very safe and results are seen immediately. There is no downtime or recovery time.

The treatment causes a tightening of the skin immediately, which improves the appearance of scars, stretch marks and lax skin. The RF energy is absorbed by the skin and is converted to heat. The heat causes collagen contraction which results in tightening and new collagen production. The new collagen that replaces the damaged collagen can be identified with a technique called “collagen mapping. The RF technology is the most effective and safest way to treat the skin. The RF energy activates the cells in the skin, which results in collagen production and tightening. It also helps to improve skin elasticity and tone, which can reduce scarring and stretch marks.

RF microneedling causes the skin structure to regenerate, forming new collagen and elastin fibers. Radiofrequency microneedling creates channels in the skin that are deeper and more permanent than those created by micro-needling. Microneedling is usually performed on the face, neck and décolleté, and is used to treat acne scars and wrinkles. Microneedling is a non-invasive treatment that is used to stimulate collagen production and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation and acne scars.

Radiofrequency helps improve tighten sagging skin, get rid of fine lines, decrease pore size, improve skin texture and tone, and improve the appearance of stretch marks. Radiofrequency (RF) energy is the most advanced modality available for treating stretch marks.

What does radiofrequency microneedling feel like?

An anesthetic cream applied one hour before the procedure numbs the surface of the skin to help make the treatment more comfortable. You may feel a tingling feeling. Your physician may offer additional measures to increase your comfort.

How long will the radiofrequency microneedling treatment take?

Depending on the size of the area treated, the procedure itself may take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. Your physician may require that you arrive an hour before your procedure for administration of an anesthetic cream.

Is RF microneedling safe for all skin types? Yes. RF microneedling is safe for all skin types and does not damage the skin or cause any side effects. Unlike many other cosmetic treatments, It is safe for darker skin types.

Is there downtime? No downtime is required. However, fine pinpoint scabs can form but usually fall off after a week's time.

How long does the healing process take? Healing from the procedure occurs over a period of days to weeks, depending on the size of your skin treatment area and the depth of your skin wrinkles.

Will I be swollen? Most patients experience mild swelling and redness after a treatment. This is the body's way of healing itself from the skin tightening procedure.

What are the side effects of the procedure? There may be some slight changes in your skin tone, redness, or bruising.

How much does it cost? The cost of the procedure is $600 to $1200 depending on the size of the area treated and if PRP or other enhancers are added.

When will I see results from radiofrequency microneedling?

Full results are seen three to six months after treatment. Results vary from person to person. As the skin heals, collagen and elastin production increases. You may notice a decrease in the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles within two weeks after treatment. Will the results be permanent? The results of micro-needling will last for at least 12 months. More treatments may be necessary to maintain optimal results.

When can I return to my normal activities?

You may return to your normal activities immediately, as there is usually no “downtime”. Minimal redness is seen in some patients but it usually disappears shortly after treatment. Heat-related complications can occur but are uncommon. There is no special care needed after treatment. As a part of good skin care, sunscreen is recommended.

How many radiofrequency microneedling treatments will I need?

A single treatment can produce good results. However, each body area is treated with three or six treatments, spaced at least two to three weeks apart. You may need more than these numbers to achieve optimal results.
