What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is an intense exfoliation process that rejuvenates the skin by utilizing diamond crystals to remove the upper layer of the stratum corneum.  The diamond micro-abrasion uses a closed vacuum system to suction up dead cells and white and blackheads.   This process exfoliates the skin, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin which will result in firmer, more youthful-looking skin over time. This simple, quick, and convenient procedure has become very popular with patients showing the early signs of aging, sun exposure, and other facial imperfections. Non-invasive and non-wounding to the skin’s surface, the procedure entails virtually little discomfort, downtime, or recovery. A patient typically experiences some redness for about an hour after the procedure.*

Q: Are there any contraindications for microdermabrasion?

A: It is up to each physician to determine what he or she considers to be a contraindication for microdermabrasion. However, the following situations are reported in the medical literature:

  • Patients are asked to cease the use of certain topical agents such as glycolic acids, alpha-hydroxy acids, and Retin-A for a few days before microdermabrasion treatment.
  • Patients who present with certain facial skin disorders may be advised not to pursue treatment, e.g. acne rosacea or even facial telangiectasia.
  • If a patient experiences red streaking from the treatment because of over intense strokes or very sensitive skin, the patient should cease further treatments until the erythema has fully subsided.
  • Patients with any signs of sunburn should not be treated.

Q. What are the uses of microdermabrasion?

A. Microdermabrasion buffs the skin of fine lines and discoloration while refining texture and hue and increasing the production of collagen and elastin. It may also be used for scars ( from pregnancy, trauma, acne, chickenpox, or surgery scars). Deep discoloration, melasma, and tattoos can be treated with microdermabrasion as well.*

Q. What results can I expect?

A. Depending on the area treated, you will notice an improvement in your skin’s appearance after about the third treatment. Acne scars will be less obvious. Age spots and fine lines are greatly diminished and many patients report that their skin seems to be softer, smoother, and younger-looking. After your first treatment, your skin will have a fresh pink glow. Improvement continues throughout your treatment program.*

Q. What is having microdermabrasion like?

A. During a microdermabrasion treatment, your skin is suctioned while diamond crystals are passed over your skin resulting in a gentle scrubs-like sensation that can be adjusted to your comfort level. This gentle abrasive technique efficiently produces satisfying results. Treatments are applied through a course of weekly sessions. Microdermabrasion can enhance skin condition and yield effect which surgery cannot achieve in combating the signs of aging skin.* Most importantly, it is safe to use on all skin types and colors and can be used along with chemical peels, dermal fillers, botox, and the Thermage procedure to achieve optimal skin rejuvenation. Our staff will help you chose which treatments will help you achieve the results that you desire.

Q. How often can I get a microdermabrasion treatment?

A. Every 7 to 10 days for up to 12-15 treatments. Most patients see results after 3 treatments and may only need 6 treatments before going to monthly treatments. Monthly treatments are recommended to maintain the best results.*

Q. How do medical microdermabrasion differ from spa or home microdermabrasion treatments?

A. The equipment used to perform medical microdermabrasion is much more powerful and effective than spa equipment or home treatments. Salon microdermabrasion does not penetrate the skin as deeply as medical microdermabrasion, therefore, yielding less effective treatments. Medical microdermabrasion can penetrate deeper than a spa or home treatment if just a few treatments.

Q. What’s the downtime?

A. There is little or no downtime. Your skin may appear pink for a day or two after the treatment.
