Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. This can lead to a number of problems such as weight gain, fatigue, and depression. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Anyone can get hypothyroidism, but it is more common in women and those over the age of 50. Treatment for hypothyroidism usually involves taking thyroid hormone medications.
Types of thyroid medications:
-Thyroid hormone replacement pills: These pills contain synthetic versions of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4). The most common brand is levothyroxine (Levoxyl, Synthroid).
-Natural desiccated thyroid: This medication contains dried, powdered pig thyroid glands. It is a natural source of both T4 and T3. The most common brand is Armour Thyroid.
-Liothyronine: This medication contains synthetic T3 only. It is also known by the brand name Cytomel.
