Learn more about the Growth Hormone
Growth hormone is produced by the pituitary gland, which is located in the brain. It stimulates growth, cell reproduction and regeneration especially during childhood and adolescence. This hormone is necessary for normal lean muscle mass and plays an important role in body composition along with determining how we store fat especially around the stomach area.
It affects cholesterol metabolism and determines the ratio of high density to low density lipoproteins. It is also important for metabolism, bone health and normal brain function. Maintaining healthy levels of this hormone is important to prevent pre-mature aging and promote vitality as we age.
After age 30, growth hormone production begins to decline. It subsequently decreases by 2% every year as we age. Signs and symptoms of adult growth hormone deficiency may include fatigue, poor concentration, anxiety, depression, insomnia, decreased lean muscle mass and stamina, reduced bone density, sensitivity to heat and cold, higher than normal levels of low-density lipoproteins in comparison to high density lipoproteins and elevated triglycerides. Low blood levels of insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF 1) also known as somatomedin C , may be an indicator of low growth hormone levels.
