Learn more about Bio-impediance Analysis

What is it?

Bio-Impedance Analysis (BIA) is a FDA approved screening test that can be used for multiple reasons. It is commonly utilized for assessing overall health. BIA can be used to monitor the impact of hormones, nutritional supplementation, diet, exercise and nutrition on overall health. It provides information about body composition, cell membrane health, the body’s ability to generate new cells, metabolic rate and toxin load.

Fat Content

BIA measures body composition and compares it to normal ideal body composition based on weight, height and level of activity. The normal fat percentage varies with sex. Typically women have a greater percentage fat then man. Patients who are overweight or more than 40% body fat may have underlying medical conditions and should be evaluated by a doctor. These patients are at risks for insulin resistance, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, elevated cholesterol, excess estrogen hormone and hypertension.

Body Cell Mass (BCM)

Body cell mass (BCM) is a measurement of muscle and solid organs i.e. the liver, heart and kidneys mass. BCM is the functional mass of the body where work is done. All oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, glucose oxidation, protein synthesis and other metabolic work takes place within the body cell mass. The body cell mass is in effect, the total mass of all the cellular elements in the body, and therefore, represents the metabolically active component of the body. In the normally nourished individuals, muscle tissue accounts for approximately 60% of the body cell mass, organ tissue for 20% of body cell mass, with the remaining 20% made up of red cells and tissue cells.

A low BCM can be seen in individuals with a sedentary lifestyle, poor nutrition, excessive fat mass and conditions associated with muscle loss. A low BCM and an elevated fat mass can be due to insulin resistance, unbalanced hormone levels or elevated cortisol due to chronic stress, growth hormone deficiency and chronic illnesses.

A common solution should include addressing nutritional deficiencies that may be present. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and help the body maintain a healthy BCM. Amino Restore can provide amino acids and nutrients needed to maintain a healthy BCM.* Growth hormone testing should be considered as well.

If IGF1 is low consider using Arginine Replete– it may help increase BCM by supporting the growth and rebuilding of muscle, bone, skin, cartilage and connective tissue.* A healthy BCM should be 40-50% of the patients body composition.

Extracellular Mass (ECM)
ECM is the support mass of the body and is metabolically inactive, consumes no oxygen, produces no carbon dioxide and performs no work. The ECM consists of extracellular fluids (ECW which will be discussed later) and solids, such as bone and cartilage, with its primary function being that of support and transport. It does not include fat or muscle. ECM is located outside of the cellular compartment or outside of the body cell mass.

The substances used to manufacture ECM are typically secreted by the cells in the surrounding area. The types of cells which make up a particular area such as bone cells, or skin cells, are usually best equipped to provide the materials needed for their support and structure.

Fibrous connective tissue, peptides and integrins are all located within the ECM. They play important roles in how our body functions. Bone, blood and lymphatic tissues function as connective systems that transport nutrients and hormones throughout the body. Peptides play a part in the chemical reactions that take place between cells, as well as in their signaling processes. Plasma proteins in particular play an essential role in fluid movement through artery and capillary vessels. Integrins are known as the cell communicators. They assist the cell signaling activities and cell metabolism processes.

Good ECM

Maintaining a good ECM can be done with the right diet and exercise. Amino Restore, Mineral Care and Stress C Rx are recommended to help increase ECM by supporting the growth and rebuilding of bone, skin, cartilage and connective tissue.* A healthy ECM should be 40-50% of the patients body composition.

Body Mass Index (BMI): Body mass is the ratio of body height to body weight. If a BMI is high, there is an increased risk of developing certain diseases including:

  • Hypertension
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Dyslipidemia
  • Adult-Onset Diabetes (Type II)
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Female Infertility
  • Estrogen Dominance

Prevention of further weight gain is important and weight reduction is desirable.

MIC B Rx is suggested for patients with high BMIs*.

Capacitance

All living things are made of cells. Cells are membrane-bound living compartments filled with micro-organelles and solutions of water, chemicals and salts. Groups of cells can perform specialized functions and are linked by an intricate communications system.

The cell membrane is positively charged on the inside and negatively charged on the outside. The cell membrane, which is composed of essential fatty acids separates the negative and positive charges. The cell membrane has electrical insulating qualities known as capacitance. The cell membrane insulates positive and negative charge from each other much like rubber around an electrical cord. By keeping the charges separate this increases the capacity of the charge and the cell membrane behaves like an electric fence keeping the good things in the cell while keeping bad things like toxins out of the cell.

It is important that the cell membrane maintain an ion (positive and negative charges) concentration gradient (barrier) between the intracellular and extracellular spaces. This gradient creates an electrical potential difference across the membrane, which is essential to cell survival. Electrical gradients are necessary to support movement of oxygen, carbon dioxide and nutrients.

Electrical capacitance increases or decreases depending on the health and the number of cells. Damage to the cell membrane is as lethal to the cell as direct damage to the nucleus itself. The cell membrane also keeps toxins out. A lower capacitance makes the body more susceptible to toxins and infections, which may lead to a low phase angle.

Fatty acids are essential for cell membrane health. If there are not enough good essential fatty acids, the cell membrane losses it charge. This allows unwanted toxins to travel into the cell, which may cause damage to cell organelles and DNA. If the capacitance is not average or above, omega fatty acids can be used to rebuild cell membranes.

Omega 2400?contains pharmaceutical grade omega fatty acids which are designed to support a healthy capacitance. It may also help lower bad lipids while raising good lipids. Omega 2400 may help to support healthy arteries and lipid profiles blood that may support cardiac health.*

ICW & ECW

Total body water (TBW) is a measurement of total intracellular ( ICW), water inside the cell, and extracellular body water(ECW), water outside the cell. Water makes up 60% of the body. ICW makes up 2/3 of body water while ECW only 1/3.

ICW bathes all the necessary biological molecules including proteins and nucleic acids. The water inside the cell can decrease if it the cell is surrounded by toxins pushes water out to dilute toxins. This causes an increase in ECW and a decrease in ICW. The body removes toxins through defecation, urination and perspiration by the skin. These detoxification methods require adequate water for them to occur. ICW should always be greater than ECW.

A high ECW is associated with inadequate GI and liver function, low fluid intake, and skin lesions as the body tries to use the skin as a passageway to eliminate toxins. Inadequate water intake can cause serious side effects and lead to increased ECW. Long- term toxicity, dehydration and unhealthy skin are most common in patients with decreased ECW. When ECW is elevated, detoxification is recommended.

Detox Rx, GreenMed, Colon Detox and Flora Repair Support should be considered to aid the body’s detoxification pathways.*

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
The body extracts and uses energy through the process of metabolism. Metabolism occurs in two distinct and interdependent phases: 1.) Catabolism, in which the body breaks down food into its component parts and harvests the energy stored in its atomic bonds, and 2.) Anabolism, in which those component parts and energy are used to build new tissues and conduct basic life functions. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the amount of energy a body requires every day to perform its most basic function including:

  • Breathing
  • Digesting
  • Heart beating
  • Muscle activity
  • Transportation of fluids and tissue
  • Circulation of blood

BMR varies between the sexes and with age. Lean body mass is a major determinant of BMR and women tend to have less lean muscle mass. As a result, their BMR is lower than that of otherwise comparable males. BMR is at peak during infancy, and then it declines rapidly through childhood and adolescence. It continues to fall slowly with increasing age and declines further with old age largely due to a loss of muscle mass. However, this is not inevitable, because weight-bearing (resistance) exercise, arginine supplementation and in some cases when medically indicated growth hormone will prevent or reverse muscle loss among the elderly.

BMR estimates how fast you burn calories. The slower your metabolism, the more fat you will retain. If you burn your daily calorie intake, you will maintain your current weight. Burning more than your daily intake causes weight loss. There are many factors that vary metabolism. However, exercise and daily activity is key to increasing your BMR. There can be major nutritional consequences due to the decline of the BMR in advanced age. Decreased caloric requirements for the elderly may lead to decreased food intake. Consequently, low food intake can lead to insufficient intake of essential nutrients.

Thyroid Support Rx is recommended for those with low normal basal metabolic rates.*
